There isn't really APIs for getting those informations directly, so the only way of accessing them is logging in to the community site and extracting it from the badge page directly. For that, it generates a web cookie using the SDK again (it's what Steam uses in it's own browser to log you in the steamcommunity site without asking for password), and visits the badge page to extract that info. Other than that, the idler also needs to find the list of games you have remaining cards for, and also ping regularly to see if you've gotten the card drops.
It basically calls the same APIs that the game itself would call when launched, telling Steam that you launched the game. What happens is that the idler talks to the SDK and pretends to be that game, so you don't actually even need to have the game installed. I've asked a few of my friends at Valve about it and (unofficially, of course) they don't care and actually think it's pretty cool.Īs long as you have Steam running, you can communicate through the Steamworks SDK. The original Idle Master was released almost 6 months ago and to my knowledge nobody has gotten in trouble for using it. Once you've obtained those cards, you can't continue receiving more. When you purchase a game that has trading cards you're entitled to a certain number of cards. It's also worth noting that unlike the TF2 idling servers, this program isn't giving you anything you're not already entitled to receive. This is most likely why programs like this haven't been addressed in any updates to the Steam Subscriber Agreement. In this sense, Valve and the developers make more money the more cards you sell. The money you're "earning" is coming from other users purchasing your items from their wallet balance.
The game developers get 5% of that transaction as well. Valve shouldn't take any issue with you idling and selling the cards on the community market, because they get a 10% cut for each item sold.
